Sound the alarm

  • July 18, 2012 | Pippa

What if a fire could be put out by a fire alarm?

US scientists have found a way to extinguish flames using sound. Blasting noise at a flame increases the air movement around it. If enough disruption is caused, the flame can go out.

The technology could be used to fight fires in plane cockpits or submarines. Putting out a cockpit fire with water or chemicals can damage electronic equipment and cause big problems in getting safely back on the ground.
