Diabetes is a horrible disease; I think any treatment that helps people with it should be encouraged.

New guidelines for England have changed the criteria for weight-loss surgery so more obese people with diabetes are eligible. This has proved controversial; some think surgery is a quick fix and a way of avoiding dieting and exercise.

But surgery alone is not a permanent fix. It has to be combined with a restricted diet and exercise to have any long-lasting effect. With diabetes costing the NHS so much, doctors need all treatment options available to them.
