I love a bargain, and the UK might have found one in an unlikely place. Researchers say we can use free TV signals instead of expensive radar to track aeroplanes.

Low-power TV signals bounce off planes just like radar signals do. Technology is now good enough to detect this and show where planes are. This is great, as TV signals are already out there beaming us shows and adverts, so we could save money on radar facilities.

I wonder whether it's a bit late though - don't we watch everything online now?

Should we track planes with TV?

TV signals may prove better than radar as they aren't disturbed by obstacles such as wind turbines.
