When I heard that a 'mega-telescope' was being built in Hawaii I looked forward to seeing fascinating images. But the decision has caused some upset.

Some native Hawaiians believe building on the Mauna Kea mountain is disrespectful as it's a sacred site. A backup location in the Canary Islands is at a much lower altitude, meaning the images may be affected by higher levels of water vapour.

This debate raises interesting questions about science and spirituality. I hope that wherever the telescope ends up everyone can share the wonder of its discoveries.

Should the new telescope be built on Mauna Kea?

Mauna Kea is already home to 13 other telescopes.
