Summer is over and I've said goodbye to warm sunshine until next year. But eruptions from the Sun's turbulent surface pose a risk to us all year round.

Electromagnetic storms caused by the Sun's activity could damage communication and electrical equipment, such as our GPS satellite network. Today a new centre opened in Exeter to monitor solar storms and protect the UK from their effects. It's good thinking - I can't imagine what would happen if our power and communication networks went down...
