Hands down, the thing I remember most from my last Flaming Lips concert is front man Wayne Coyne crowd surfing in a human hamster ball.

This brilliant method of traversing uneven, shifting terrain hasn't escaped attention from scientists. Enter theRosphere. This spherical robot rolls easily along surfaces and past obstructions that legged or wheeled robots would struggle with.

Its developers envision it being used to monitor agricultural land. Me? I'd use it for transport a massaging bed of balls to roll around on!

Would you like ball robots patrolling elsewhere?

The Rosphere is propelled by an internal swinging weight that mimics the shifting weight of a hamster.
