Like most kids growing up, I would wait with excitement for the latest games console. I'd take it for granted that computers would get faster, gadgets get smaller and yesterday's innovation would become obsolete.

Now researchers from Zurich and Cambridge have developed robots that 'evolve' without human intervention. A 'mother' robot is able to build its own offspring, assessing and improving each design along the way.

As technology progresses, I worry that perhaps one day it will be humanity that becomes obsolete.
