For the first time in the UK, doctors have transplanted a newborn baby's kidneys and liver cells and given them to two different recipients whose own organs were failing.

The six-day-old baby girl was born in very poor health, and her parents had agreed to the organ donation. It must have been a very difficult situation for the family, but at least they will know they have helped transform the lives of those who received the organs.

Official UK figures show about 15 infants under the age of two currently awaiting organ transplants, but the true number could be higher.
