Search engines such as Google use coded logical sequences called algorithms. These decide which results appear and in what order when you search online.

Some people, including researchers, have suggested that Google could be tweaking its algorithms to display positive or negative things about different political candidates - and that could influence the outcome of elections.

The problem is it's hard to tell if these claims are true. The search engine companies keep the details of their algorithms secret.
