We need more food and the planet needs less pollution. So I'm excited that the US food regulator has said that GM salmon can be sold there. The salmon grows twice as fast as wild salmon, meaning more food for less energy. It's a big first for the US, but GM foods remain banned from EU supermarkets.
I'm still nervous about the risks GM foods might pose, though. How can we be sure that they're safe to eat? What would happen if modified animals got into the wild? But the benefits make GM food worth exploring, right?
