News about war and discord sometimes makes me wish I were none the wiser. But today all I see is progress! Scientists in Spain have managed to turn back the proverbial biological clock. They've taken cells in genetically modified mice back to an embryonic state, something that was thought to be impossible. This type of news keeps me curious and upbeat about what's going on around the planet. Perhaps it will inspire others to put down their weapons and pick up a test tube…

This research was published online in the journal Nature on 11 September 2013.
