I love life in a big city and its organised chaos. So I'm inspired by the way New York is gathering, processing and distributing streams of raw data to run the city more efficiently.

Dates of recent fires, for instance, help the fire department decide which buildings to inspect next. All this is possible because of a recently passed law that requires all the city's agencies to share information with the public.

This for me is a brilliant example of how to harness technology rather than run from it.

Do you think cities should release their data?

When used well, the data helps all citizens make informed decisions.
