I often struggle to sleep at night. Many people use medication to help them nod off and relieve anxiety. Could one commonly used drug be connected to dementia?

A Canadian study links long-term use of the sleep and anxiety drug benzodiazepine with an increased risk of dementia. But it's complicated. Does the drug increase the risk of dementia, or are people with sleeping disorders more likely to develop dementia anyway? Either way I hope the research helps people use the drug more safely, because insomnia and dementia are both awful.
