It sounds weird that babies who have three parents could soon be a reality.

There's a procedure that can stop babies suffering from some genetic conditions caused by the mother having faulty DNA. Healthy parts of an egg cell from the mother can be removed and put into another egg cell donated by a woman who is free from the genetic condition. The father's sperm are then used to fertilise the new egg.

It's early days - but, assuming it's safe, I think it's a wonderful step forward in preventing unfortunate genetic conditions.

This new procedure can prevent harm caused by mutations in mitochondria - the ‘power stations’ of cells.
