Escape route for small fry

  • August 30, 2012 | Ling

‘By-catch’ might not be much of a byword at your local chippy, but catching unwanted fish is a serious threat to wild fish stocks, as well as to your favourite fish supper.

I’m hoping Dan Watson’s SafetyNet will help. His ‘escape rings’ attach to nets and guide smaller fish out through them with bright lights that the fish find attractive.

The lights are self-powered by the motion of the ocean on the nets – which makes them a sustainable way to save our seafood for generations to come.

In the North Sea, half the fish caught are thrown back dead as unintended by-catch.

This sounds like a great idea. How on earth will the fishermen be encouraged to use them?
