Doomsday for coral?
December 21, 2012 |
Of course the world won’t end today. Even the Maya themselves didn’t believe it. But the world’s survival is in our hands when it comes to controlling carbon emissions.
Ocean life, such as coral, is vulnerable to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide because this makes the sea more acidic. And in acidified waters, corals can’t access the chemicals they need to make nice strong shells. Now, a simulation has predicted that almost all our coral could be gone by 2100 if we don’t get a grip on carbon emissions.
Enough about the apocalypse – let’s focus on real problems!
