Deep-sea stowaways

  • May 24, 2012 | Pippa

You may think there are many things deep-sea submarine operators should worry about, but perhaps they should also consider stowaways.

Alvin, a deep-sea sub, managed to pick up limpets and transfer them across 600 km of ocean, even though it was cleaned in-between expeditions. These stowaways could have a damaging effect on their new environment by competing with other species or carrying disease.

The team from Chicago have warned other researchers to be extra careful when moving their subs from place to place. How do you feel about deep-sea exploration?
