Bluetooth in the blood

  • March 20, 2013 | Pippa

I really hate it when I have to have blood tests. Now a tiny new device could make them a thing of the past for people with chronic illness. It’s inserted under the skin and wirelessly monitors substances in your blood. It then beams the data straight to your doctor via a Bluetooth device or your mobile phone. Among other things it can track glucose and cholesterol – very important if you have a condition such as diabetes or heart disease.

The technology could help us all live healthier lives. But it would also makes us more reliant on our mobile phones.

The device has only been tested in rats, but could be used by patients in four years.
