Greatest Arctic sea ice melt?

  • August 22, 2012 | Pippa

The amount of Arctic sea ice changes every year as the seasons pass, but this year the icecap’s extent is set to drop to the smallest ever recorded.

The impact on the ecosystem and the people who depend on the ice for a living is harder to measure. It will be a very difficult summer for Arctic dwellers.

With less ice around, less light gets reflected back into the atmosphere. This warms the sea, causing even more ice to melt.

How long before we see an ice-free Arctic summer? And at what cost?
