Can wheat win against weather?

  • November 29, 2012 | Ling

I’ve been subjected to train delays with the nasty weather this week. But I’m luckier than wheat farmers worldwide, who’ve been hard hit by floods, droughts and hurricanes this year.

To secure our daily bread, researchers are helping farmers meet these new challenges. They’re producing wheat with genes that help the crop withstand adverse weather.

It could be a relief for both farmers and consumers, following recent extreme weather and rising food costs. But the new crops will produce GM food – so for some this idea might not be easy to swallow.
