Sea urchins inspire scientists

  • February 7, 2013 | Jasmine

I often think of sea creatures as either food or funny pets. But scientists at Newcastle University might use them to prevent climate change.

Sea urchins cleverly convert carbon dioxide into shells and spikes. Researchers believe they could use the same technique to capture and store carbon dioxide emissions from power plants. So the gas would be removed from the atmosphere before it caused any harm. This might give us the freedom to continue emitting greenhouse gases at our current rate – but should it?

Sea urchins use nickel to capture carbon dioxide. Copying this trick could become an affordable way to combat climate change.
