Spray-on heart patch

  • August 1, 2012 | David

I’d suggest a box of chocolates to mend a broken heart. Researchers have a different idea: an electrically charged needle that sprays beating heart cells onto damaged tissue.

Heart attacks can damage important tissues, making the heartbeat weak or irregular. This new technology is able to make a 3D patch of living, beating heart cells. The patch could be grafted onto damaged parts of a heart, to help it beat normally. This could improve the lives of many heart attack survivors.

The method uses a needle charged to 10,000 volts to create a fine spray.
