Tastier tomatoes?

  • May 31, 2012 | Priya

I grew tomatoes at home last year. They were much tastier than supermarket ones – but it was a lot of work for quite a modest harvest!

Now scientists think they’ll soon be able to replicate that home-grown taste in supermarket tomatoes. Work has just finished on sequencing the tomato genome. This new research could lead to more flavourful tomatoes that can also cope with changing climates and are better at resisting pests.

Good news for lazy home food growers…

This research appears in the 30 May 2012 issue of the journal Nature.

This research could also be used to breed new varieties of related crops such as aubergines and peppers.
