Stem cells help transplant patients

  • March 8, 2012 | Nicola

Stem cells are awesome, in my opinion, and so is this story. Scientists injected transplant patients with stem cells soon after they received their new kidney. The stem cells appeared to help the patients’ bodies accept the new organ.

Transplant patients usually have to take powerful drugs for the rest of their lives to prevent their bodies from rejecting the transplant.

It’s also the first time this technique has been used for ‘mismatched’ transplants, where the donor and recipient weren’t related or immunologically similar.

The immune-suppressing drugs used by transplant patients can increase the risk of serious infection.
