Big freeze UV link
-
October 10, 2011 |
The chill in the air over the weekend reminds me of Britain’s last few freezing winters. Researchers now think these cold winters are mainly caused by dips in solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
The Sun has an 11-year activity cycle. Researchers thought this cycle affected local winter temperatures – but they didn’t know how. It seems that the UV radiation affects the circulation of air, so some places end up cooler and others hotter.
This information could help in predicting the next big freeze, and give us chance to prepare!

Some places have had warmer winters because of solar activity, so the global average is not affected by UV radiation.
