Scientists agree on rising sea levels

  • November 30, 2012 | Ling

While we’ve been freezing in the recent cold snap, over 20 research groups have finally agreed on how much melting icecaps have raised global sea levels: roughly 11 mm in the past 20 years. They’ve also confirmed that Antarctica is losing ice, and that Greenland is losing ice five times faster than in 1992.

I’m in awe of the organisational skills it surely took to get all those scientists on the same page. I think whoever achieved that needs to get our diplomats and politicians to agree on a solution to global warming!

This research appears in the 30 November 2012 issue of the journal Science.

Depending on the lie of the land, a 10 mm rise in sea level can erode between 0.5 and 10 metres of beach.

If scientists co-operate, sharing ideas, criticizing and honing them, knowledge advances. It’s neither a question of maximizing funding or of not confusing us–cooperation is the most efficient route to finding the truth.
